Perfume "Edge"

If you're a fan of Japanese pop culture, then you probably know of Morning Musume, an all-girl J-pop group that debuted in 1997.

If you're a "BIG" fan of Japanese pop culture, then you probably know that Morning Musume are NOT big anymore, although they used to dominate the J-pop hit chart.

And now, if you're a "HUGE" fan of Japanese pop culture, you have probably checked out the latest and hottest group called "Perfume" already.

Perfume is a group of three 19-year-old girls, whose nicknames are Nocchi, Ah-chan and Kashiyuka.

They sing, dance and talk just like other girl pop groups do. But what makes them most distinctive is their music ─ it's not the typical, cheap "idol" music, but is really cool, with techno beats and sounds. As they call themselves a "future techno pop unit," they wear futuristic outfits and dance uniquely to the songs.

Each member of Perfume had been dreaming of becoming big as a singer, ever since she was little. However, it wasn't easy for them to gain popularity, and becoming big seemed impossible. But when they came to Tokyo in 2003 and met a sound producer Yasutaka Nakata, their performance style changed dramatically from "cute (but cheesy)" to "futuristic and stylish." Their well-trained cute voices matched the cool techno music and attracted many DJ's, creators, music lovers and more.

Now, after 5 years have passed since they came to Tokyo, Perfume is undeniably at the top of the whole J-pop culture. Nobody doubted that their latest album would burst into the chart, which became true as soon as it was released. We see and hear Perfume almost every day, everywhere. Considering the fact that it's not only their cute looks but also the cool music and stylish performances that are making them popular, it seems that the "Perfume boom" is not likely to end anytime soon.
